designing the vocal alarm and improving medical ventilator

چکیده
abstract background : today, as many as 1.5 million americans use ventilators once in a year. .response to mechanical ventilation alarms remains to be one of the most challenging tasks facing physicians, nurses or other medical personnel in the icu. in the present study we aimed to compare the response times to “vocal alarms” and “visual or audible ones”. methods : in the present study we developed a system to evaluate the “vocal alarm” and improve the medical ventilator “benet 7200 alarms” with it. ventilator generates the alarms when patient has any problem. the time of activation & deactivation is recorded. the survey was done in central icu for six days, 3 days with vocal alarm, and 3days with “beep” alarms and detected alarm events then recorded seventy-two hours of data for each type of alarms. all of events information saved in the memory and spss was used to determine difference between two types of alarms. results : on the average, the duration of the ventilator alarms activation were 33 ± 21 seconds for vocal alarms and 60 ± 46 for audible “beep” alarms. the response times for vocal alarms were significantly lower (p = 0.001). conclusions : the response times for normal “beep” alarms were longer than vocal alarms. key words : medical ventilator, vocal alarm, equipment alarm system.

The evolution of vocal alarm communication in rodents
On encountering a predator, many species emit potentially risky vocalizations known as alarm calls. We evaluated the relative importance of two adaptive hypotheses on the evolution of calling: (1) communicating to predators, which may function by deterring pursuit and hence increasing individual survival, and (2) an alternative nepotistic hypothesis for alarm calling whereby callers obtain dire...
متن کاملImproving Clinical Alarm Management: Guidance and Strategies.
This article focuses on the type of problems that lead to false or nonactionable clinical alarms and the type of data that can help identify which of these alarms are most prevalent in specific units in healthcare facilities. The process of identifying necessary data is first described, as this activity will drive later choices on capturing data. This article also discusses how to use the data ...
متن کاملDesigning Empowering Vocal and Tangible Interaction
Our voice and body are important parts of our self-experience, and our communication and relational possibilities. They gradually become more important for Interaction Design due to increased development of tangible interaction and mobile communication. In this paper we present and discuss our work with voice and tangible interaction in our ongoing research project RHYME. The goal is to improve...
متن کاملHeterospecific alarm call recognition in a non-vocal reptile.
The ability to recognize and respond to the alarm calls of heterospecifics has previously been described only in species with vocal communication. Here we provide evidence that a non-vocal reptile, the Galápagos marine iguana (Amblyrhynchus cristatus), can eavesdrop on the alarm call of the Galápagos mockingbird (Nesomimus parvulus) and respond with anti-predator behaviour. Eavesdropping on com...
متن کاملImproving Equipment Maintainability via Alarm Threshold Optimization
The Operations Technology Center (OTC) is responsible for the systems used to manage and maintain the AT&T long distance network. In this paper we describe an effort within the OTC to improve the maintainability of AT&T’s 4ESS switches, by optimizing the thresholding rules within the operation support system responsible for maintaining these switches. This optimization task required us to firs...
